We talk about the weather all the time, but while we follow the sky closely, the \u201cweather\u201d in the sea largely remains unseen. In coastal areas, water temperature can vary dramatically over short distances due to factors such as depth, wind exposure, and circulation. Yet this fine\u2011scale variability is still poorly documented.<\/p>\n

Through an ongoing citizen science project at \u00c5bo Akademi University, participants help reveal this hidden world by placing simple temperature loggers near their homes or summer houses, capturing the conditions marine life experiences at high resolution. Last year\u2019s pilot was a great success, with enthusiastic volunteers across the Archipelago Sea already providing valuable data. Building on this momentum, we are now expanding along the entire Finnish coast, including \u00c5land: this year\u2019s first logger was placed on May 2nd with the help of a 6\u2011year\u2011old citizen climate detective and the 40 loggers distributed so far already span from N\u00e4rpes in the north to Loviisa in the east.<\/p>\n

However, many areas are still not covered, and we warmly invite everyone to join by deploying a logger into the Sea at a fixed structure (such as a pier or buoy) close to their home.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>A 6\u2011year\u2011old citizen climate detective has just placed a temperature logger into the sea, carefully tying it to the pier so it can record the water\u2019s hidden \u201cweather\u201d without being carried away by waves. The logger measures temperature every 15 minutes, capturing the story of warm heatwaves and sudden cold spells beneath the surface. These simple observations help us better understand how coastal waters change and how marine life experiences them. \/ <\/em>En 6-\u00e5rig klimatdetektiv har just placerat en temperaturlogger i havet och f\u00e4st den noggrant vid piren s\u00e5 att den kan registrera vattnets dolda \u201dv\u00e4der\u201d utan att spolas bort av v\u00e5gorna. Loggern m\u00e4ter temperaturen var 15:e minut och dokumenterar ber\u00e4ttelsen om varma v\u00e4rmeb\u00f6ljor och pl\u00f6tsliga k\u00f6ldkn\u00e4ppar under ytan. Vi pratar om v\u00e4dret hela tiden, men medan vi f\u00f6ljer himlen noga f\u00f6rblir \u201dv\u00e4dret\u201d i havet till stor del osynligt. I kustomr\u00e5den kan vattentemperaturen variera dramatiskt \u00f6ver korta avst\u00e5nd p\u00e5 grund av faktorer som djup, vind och cirkulation. \u00c4nd\u00e5 \u00e4r denna variation p\u00e5 detaljniv\u00e5 fortfarande d\u00e5ligt dokumenterad.<\/p>\n

I ett p\u00e5g\u00e5ende medborgarforskningsprojekt vid \u00c5bo Akademi bidrar deltagarna till att avsl\u00f6ja denna dolda v\u00e4rld genom att placera enkla temperaturloggrar n\u00e4ra sina hem eller sommarstugor, vilket g\u00f6r det m\u00f6jligt att med h\u00f6g uppl\u00f6sning registrera de f\u00f6rh\u00e5llanden som det marina livet upplever. F\u00f6rra \u00e5rets pilotprojekt var en stor framg\u00e5ng, med entusiastiska frivilliga \u00f6ver hela Sk\u00e4rg\u00e5rdshavet som redan bidragit med v\u00e4rdefull data. Med detta momentum som grund ut\u00f6kar vi nu verksamheten l\u00e4ngs hela den finska kusten, inklusive \u00c5land: \u00e5rets f\u00f6rsta logger placerades ut den 2 maj med hj\u00e4lp av en 6-\u00e5rig medborgarklimatdetektiv, och de 40 loggare som hittills distribuerats str\u00e4cker sig redan fr\u00e5n N\u00e4rpes i norr till Lovisa i \u00f6ster.<\/p>\n

Meneill\u00e4\u00e4n olevassa \u00c5bo Akademin kansalaistiedehankkeessa osallistujat auttavat paljastamaan t\u00e4m\u00e4n piilotetun maailman asettamalla kotinsa tai kes\u00e4m\u00f6kkins\u00e4 l\u00e4helle yksinkertaisia l\u00e4mp\u00f6tilamittareita, jotka tallentavat merenel\u00e4vien elinolosuhteet tarkasti. Viime vuonna toteutettu pilottiprojekti oli suuri menestys, ja innokkaat vapaaehtoiset ymp\u00e4ri Saaristomerta ovat jo toimittaneet runsaasti arvokasta dataa.
